Technical and Training Documents

SMARTBoard Tutorial
Intended Audience: English Professors and students at Purdue

Created: Fall 2003
Summary:The Purdue English Department purchased a SMARTBoard for use in lecture; unfortunately, none of the professors seemed to be able to figure out how to use it. The "Writing for the Computer Industry" class came to the rescue. We broke into teams and each team learned how to perform certain tasks, recorded the steps, and we published this guide to help our faculty. (Other authors include Michael Manske and Jonathan Shafer)

EPICS Information Management Systems Quick Reference
Intended Audience: EPICS students (mostly Engineering students at Purdue University)

Created: Fall 2003
Summary: Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) places students from various disciplines together into teams to simulate a working environment and perform duties to help non-profit organizations around the community. The Information Management Systems (IMS) EPICS team acts as the backbone of all of EPICS by creating software applications that organize the other EPICS teams. We documented their functions in a quick reference. (Other authors include Carrie Baird, Jeni Kaufman, Nim Kyger)

Put Petey in His Place
Intended Audience: Employees of MED Institute, Inc
Created: Fall of 2004
Summary: One day, while working at MED Institute, the IT Manager, Scott, came in to the office, visibly frustrated and asked me to create some training materials on how to properly replace a toilet paper roll in the office bathrooms. Using a Flash application called Viewlet Builder, I created an animated presentation for him to give to the rest of the company (and believe it or not, he really used it!). All in all, I would say "Petey" is one of my finest creations. (requires Flash to view)

Short Articles

History of the Engineering Computer Network
Intended Audience: Anyone interested in the history of Purdue and computing
Aim: Educate on how ECN has changed Purdue University over the years
Created: Fall 2003/Spring 2004 (currently under construction)
Summary: This has been my big project this year, interviewing employees about how ECN became what it is and reading old newsletters and documents. Here’s what I have pieced together so far. Bill Simmons, who is mentioned on the main page, was the main instrument in getting this project started. He was part of ECN from the beginning and he recently retired.

Researched Writings

Essays Inspired by the Writings of Kenneth Burke
Intended Audience: Other students digging deeply into the writings of Kenneth Burke
Created: Spring 2004
Summary: In the Spring of 2004, I was honored to take a class from Professor David Blakesley, a professor in the Rhetoric and Composition program at Purdue University and the head of the Professional Writing program, of which I am a graduate. This Master's level class focused on the writings of Kenneth Burke, a philosopher who wrote on rhetoric. Each week, we exchanged a page long essay on our thoughts the readings inspired. We wrote a final essay to end the semester that was longer; I chose to write on identity, a major theme in Burke, as I was soul searching on whether to continue on with the Master's or take a job (I found my identity in the working world at the time and took the job).
Burke on Identification: Who Are We and How Did We Get Here?
Identity by Association
Permanence and Change: In a Nutshell
Snow Crash and Religion

Essay on Gender, Body, and Rhetoric
Intended Audience: Students in Gender, Body, and Rhetoric class
Created: Spring 2004

Summary: I was honored to take a Master's class from Professor Jennifer Bay, one of the most brilliant women I have ever been priviledged to work with (in fact, this online portfolio was her idea and I thank her for it). Each week, a student presented on a topic having to do with gender, the body, and rhetoric, and I presented on Dora by Freud.

Frames Website Project
Created: Fall 2003
Audience: Teaching Assistant using Windows XP technology

Summary: The object of this project was to produce a site with fabricated information using frame tags. Not all that practical, but kind of fun in that it forced creativity and taught hard-coding techniques. Created without the aid of dreamweaver.

No-Frames Website Project
Created: Fall 2003

Audience: Teaching Assistant using Windows XP technology
Summary: Another website produced with fabricated information, this one included javascript elements. Created under the same conditions as the Frame Website Project.
